The Tale of the Dog

Have you ever heard the story of the dog sleeping on a veranda with a sharp nail poking into his side? It goes like this: the dog whimpers in pain, but the owner reads his newspaper, unmoved. When a passerby asks why the dog is whimpering, the owner nonchalantly replies that the dog will move when he's tired of the pain. This anecdote is a reminder that we can't always rely on others to solve our problems for us. Sometimes, we need to take action to change our own reality. To set the tone, let's start with a poem that I wrote inspired by this story...

“The Tale of The Dog”

The faithful dog lies whimpering in pain,
Beside his master, who reads the news again,
A passerby asks, why the mournful cries,
The master replies, a nail, his discomfort implies.

Why not move him, the passerby inquires,
Patience, says the master, he'll move when he desires,
A moral in the tale, for all to learn and heed,
Solve your own problems, only then you will be freed.

In the poem of the dog on the veranda, we see a poignant example of how we often neglect to take action when we have the power to change our circumstances. The dog is whimpering in pain from a sharp nail, but the owner does not offer to help until the dog is ready to move. How many of us are like the dog, waiting for someone else to make the first move to fix our problems?

It's easy to feel powerless in the face of life's challenges, to believe that our circumstances are beyond our control. But the truth is that we always have a choice. We can either let life happen to us or take action to shape our reality.

Taking action requires courage and determination, but it's the only way to create change. It means identifying the things in our lives that are holding us back and taking steps to remove them. It means facing our fears and doubts head-on, even when it's uncomfortable. It means having faith in ourselves and our ability to overcome obstacles.

In the end, the moral of the poem is clear: we cannot wait for others to solve our problems. We must take ownership of our lives and be proactive in creating the reality we want. So let us not be like the dog in the poem, but instead be midful of our power, when tired of the pain, we can take action and free ourselves from the sharp nail.
